Van Gogh's Dream…
In 1890, while staying at the Ravoux Inn, Vincent wrote in a letter to his brother Theo : "One day or another, I believe I shall find a way of having an exhibition of my own in a café".
What may now sound like a trivial wish was, in Van Gogh's opinion, the most appropriate way to share his work with a genuinely interested public, far from the museums and the fancy boulevard galleries.
Though Van Gogh has since become the world's most acclaimed artist, the dream he expressed more than a century ago from his small bedroom in the Ravoux Inn never had a chance to be realized.
Now the time has come for the Institut Van Gogh to make that possible.
His 7 sq.metre room lit by a single skylight will thus become a “room with a view” of Auvers-sur-Oise, and the smallest museum in the world.
…And Beyond Van Gogh's Wildest Dreams
Van Gogh often used to say that art was to be made by the people and for the people. He wanted nothing more than his works to be seen by the greatest numbers.
Today, thanks to a permanent Webcam access to Vincent's last room, donors from all over the world will be able to see the painting whenever they chose, from their own home. If you cannot come to Van Gogh at the Ravoux Inn, Van Gogh will come to you !
A French listed National Historic Landmark, Van Gogh's room at the Ravoux Inn is the designated frame for such a painting as The Fields.
